WHAT IS The VANISHING AMERICA PROJECT?
The Vanishing America Project is a multi-year journey I’ve undertaken to use my skill as a photographer and a writer to promote conservation and raise awareness about what we are losing – our culture, our wildlife, and our landscape – in hopes that some of it will still be around for future generations to enjoy.

Where is Holt?
I call the bus BABS. I call the Land Rover The Greasy Beast. My boy cat is Reggie, and my girl cat is Missy. And the five of us are in Chattanooga, TN to finish putting together the images and video collected while documenting the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill!

The Vanishing America Project Documents the Gulf Oil Spill
If the threat of the loss of our Gulf Coast wetlands, wildlife and ways of life isn`t the perfect subject for The Vanishing America Project, then I don`t know what is.
I`ve been in Louisiana and Mississippi for over two months now documenting the spill, the coast and the people affected by the disaster.
It`s a difficult story to tell, especially when the American people are being led to believe that it`s all over and everything can go back to normal. Well, I am here. I have seen it all with my own eyes. And I can tell you... it is FAR FROM OVER.
I`ve been up in helicopters, spent the night on Coast Guard ships, dug up oil on off-limits beaches and have seen things that few people will ever have a chance to see. I`ve made friends with the people who are most affected by the disaster -- the residents, the fishermen, their wives and their families.
And I have been swimming in the water! Yes, the water that our own president has declared safe. It is not safe. Not by a long shot.
The Gulf Coast may look okay, but it is vanishing.
The first book about the people involved with and affected by the oil spill is now available online. People of the Spill can be purchased through the link below. And 50% of the profits go to help the people affected by the spill rebuild their lives.
