People say driving through the flat Nebraska farmland is boring. I disagree. It's flat and monotonous, but far from boring. I'd even call it "peaceful". The barren winter fields are scattered with a patchwork of leftover snow, waterfowl sprinkle the air in strange symmetrical formations, and the gray winter sky silhouettes the naked trees that dot the edges of melting creeks and streams. It's really quite special.
Like yesterday's drive, I've seen some neat things... an old abandoned wooden church next to a deserted motel, a small family farm with the barn and farmhouses nestled into a softly rolling hillside, flooded fields festooned with waterfowl, and frozen creek banks calving chunks of thick ice and snow like miniature icebergs. Lots of great things to see, but still nowhere to pull over and photograph. :-(
I did manage to get a shot or two of the road from my driver's seat, though. And, it's surprisingly easy to drive when looking through the viewfinder of the camera. Everything is visible, just smaller.
It's still rainy, still cold, and I'm parked at a reststop somewhere in Nebraska tonight. Almost 1200 miles into the trip and I'm not even halfway there. But, I'm enjoying the ride and looking forward to the rest of the journey... and that's what really counts.
